The exchange, step by step

  1. The screen wakes.A customer walks up. The 10.4 inch screen stays readable in full sun.
  2. The customer chooses.Exchange an empty, or buy a new cylinder. Prices and stock come from SmartDesk.
  3. The terminal takes the card.Follow the instructions on the terminal. The machine continues when the payment is approved.
  4. The bottom door unlocks.Behind it is a free chamber. An exchange starts with a free chamber for the return.
  5. The empty goes in.The customer closes the door. The carousel never turns while a door is open.
  6. The camera checks it.The carousel brings it to the camera. It compares the empty with your list: size, material, brand design, colour, cap and label.
  7. The carousel turns.One column at a time, about 3.5 seconds per step. Every door stays closed.
  8. The middle door unlocks.Behind it waits the full cylinder the customer chose.
  9. The customer takes it.The customer closes the door. SmartDesk updates the stock.
  10. The screen offers a receipt.The customer chooses no receipt, or a receipt by email.

The kiosk screens follow the real GasAutomat kiosk. Prices and stock are sample data.

One common setup. Payment and return order are set per machine.

Stock changes when a cylinder goes in or comes out. Turning the carousel changes nothing.

Technicians assemble GasAutomat machines in the VendingRobotics factory in Paphos. The LED canopies are lit.

    16 positions on 3 levels. A motor turns the right chamber to the door, sale after sale.

  • Built-in safety

    Natural ventilation that works without power. An infrared gas detector raises the alarm, then cuts the power.

How we count
  • Our fleet: 18% of sales come on Sundays or outside 08:00 to 20:00. For shops with weekday hours it is 48%. Some of those customers would have come anyway, so this is the most it can be.
  • A counter or cage sale takes about 10 minutes of staff time: leaving the till, the walk to the cage and back.
  • A full machine (47 cylinders) is loaded in 15 minutes.
  • Margin and staff cost are estimates for the country you choose, in its currency, from public 2025 and 2026 cylinder prices and Eurostat labour costs. Use your own.
  • Before machine price, installation and running costs. Not a quote.

Questions buyers ask

What does a machine cost, and how soon can we have it?

We quote per project, because the number of machines, the payment terminal and the delivery address all change the price. Delivery, commissioning, staff training and a 24-month warranty are included. Production takes about three months from your order, plus about a month of transport.

Which cylinders fit?

Steel, aluminium and composite cylinders from 5 to 13 kg, mixed in one machine. The camera tells the formats apart, and each one gets its own price. A new format is added in software. Send us yours, and we check them before you order.

Can it take back only our own cylinders?

Yes. You can limit returns to your brand. The camera turns away foreign cylinders and anything that is not a cylinder.

What does the site need?

Level, paved ground of about 2 × 2 m. No foundation. A fixed 230 V connection laid by an electrician, and mobile data or a network cable. The machine arrives assembled, and a forklift unloads it. Keep it out of ATEX zones, such as the area around fuel pumps. We check your site before we quote.

Do we need a service contract?

No. The machine is always online, so we often see a fault before your staff do, and we solve most of them remotely. Wear parts plug in and swap in minutes, with us on the phone. A technician comes when a job needs one.

How do customers pay?

Contactless card, Apple Pay and Google Pay, at a terminal set up for your payment provider. The merchant contract stays yours, so the money goes straight to your account. QR payment by phone is an option, and Vipps works in Norway.

Is it safe, and do we need a permit?

Safer than an open cylinder cage. The cylinders sit locked inside, and the machine is monitored around the clock: you see every sale, door and fault in SmartDesk. Cylinders stay closed the whole time, with no gas connection. A gas detector raises the alarm and cuts power automatically, and natural ventilation works without power. The machine is CE marked. Permits depend on your country and site: we send a document pack for your authority and answer its questions in writing.

What does VR SmartDesk show, and does it connect to our ERP?

Sales, stock per chamber, machine status and prices for every machine, with low-stock alerts and CSV export. An open API feeds your ERP system or the live stock on your website. Your ERP partner makes the connection.

Can we see one running?

Yes. We arrange visits to machines in daily use, with operators who run them. Tell us your country, and we suggest the nearest one.
